And More Rods

Picking out the right type of fishing rod for the fish you will be fishing for is essential. In most kinds of fishing rods “action” the flex in a rod is very important you don’t want to wimpy a rod or you won’t set the hook. The action of a rod depends on its materials, fiberglass or graphite its taper length as well as the number of guides and their placement. Note Graphite is stiffer then fiberglass.

Most fishing rods are rated ultra light, light, medium light, medium, medium heavy and heavy, an ultra light, light graphite or a medium light fiberglass rod would be ok fishing with light lures for smaller game fish in snag free open water. A heavy action rod would be needed to fish with bigger lures in heavy weed filled areas. Get the best fishing rod you can afford.

Tips and guides are very important parts in the make up of a good fishing rod, if a rod tip or its guides are not of quality material they will wear out much faster and the first time you will notice this is when you start losing lures when casting or a fish as your bringing it in also guides that are not straight will interfere with casting. One of the best manufacturers of guides is Fuji their hardloy guides are perfect for freshwater and light saltwater fishing rods while graphite- ceramic is best for all other types of saltwater fishing.

There are two types of reel seats chrome plated brass and graphite fuji makes a good graphite reel seat in many different sizes. Then there are the grips either in cork or foam with a rubber butt cap at the end of a rod. Ferrules come in both metal, heavy fiberglass and graphite and so long as they are wrapped in thread with a good finish should do the job, a one piece fishing rod is preferable.

A custom fishing rod is the top of the line for a fishing rod of any style or type they run in cost anywhere’s from $100 to $500 or possibly more with big game rods going from $750 to well over $3,000 dollars. Some specialty blanks will make the price a lot higher.
