Spoons

Casting spoons, trolling spoons, top water spoons, and jigging spoons. They are made from a variety of different kinds of metals, plastic and wood. They come in sizes from 1/36 ounce for small pan fish to over 3 ounces for Muskie, lake trout and large saltwater fish. Most commonly-used sizes for bass, walleye and other popular species are 1/4-3/4 ounce and they come in all colors.

Casting spoons are oval-shaped and have cupped bodies, thin light spoons sink slowly so they are better for fishing in shallow water. If they have a weed guard and a single hook, they can be fished through weeds or brush these are a good idea for cold water.

Casting spoons that are thick and heavy sink faster and are better in deeper water or fast currents you must reel them in fast and these type spoons are primarily used in warm water for active fish. When you use these spoons be sure to use a snap swivel to help prevent your line from twisting as well as allowing the spoon to move more freely.

Light and bright colors work best when using casting spoons try adding a bit of a rubber ripple tail to help entice fish to strike. When reeling in use a steady retrieve you can also raise and lower your rods tip just don’t stop your retrieve or you may get hung up.

Trolling spoons are like casting spoons, but are much thinner and lighter and often are narrow at both ends. They are made to give off more action at slower speeds than casting spoons. Trolling spoons are often used with downriggers for Bass, lake trout, salmon, walleye and other types of fish . With trolling lures you will need to vary your speed till you start catching fish.

Top water spoons are weed free spoons, and are made for casting and retrieving over and through brush, lily pads and such. When reeled in fast these lures come up and surf over matted cover without getting hung up. Many have a single hook welded to the body like Johnsons Silver Minnow so that the point is up and away from anything to get hung up on. For added attraction you can add a grub tail, or a pork rind eel.

The hook is shielded by a weed guard, Tip sharpen the hook before using. Top water spoons come in many sizes from 1/24oz to over one ounce they come in many colors as well. Your need for speed on your retrieve is what you will need to do when fishing with top water spoons

Jigging spoons are designed for bottom fish, they are thick flat and heavy. They may be jigged vertically or cast out as they flutter down is when most strikes happen. Jigging spoons have treble hooks on the tail end, the line is attached at the nose . Jigging spoons for freshwater come in a lot of sizes, from 1/8 ounce to 3/4ounce.

To use a jigging spoon you can either cast it out and bounce it across the bottom. The most effective way is to let it drop to bottom then reel in about 5 or 6 feet and then raise rod and lower rod as the spoon flutters down is when most strikes will occur.
