Saltwater Fishing Lures

In many ways freshwater lures of 1/4ozs and larger are good saltwater fishing lures, now with a ¼oz lure you would need light fishing rod and reel with at least 8 to 12lb test mono.

Shallow swimmers of the 5/8 to 1oz size, with these you would need a medium rod and reel with at least 12 to 14lb test mono preferably a 7 to 8 foot casting or spinning rod. There are many minnow type lures like red fin by Cotton Cordell, Bomber Long A by bomber, rebel minnows, and rapala minnows are all good choices but there are many others as well. Most shallow type swimmers dive 1 to 3 feet some say dark colors when it is dark and bright when it is bright but there are just as many that say it is the other way around. Fat plugs like the alpha bet series big O or big B is fantastic when reeled slowly. Sinking and big-lipped saltwater fishing lures that dive deep make sure you use a heavy mono leader. Fishing these saltwater lures slow then fast then stopping and starting again will catch you fish.

Saltwater fishing lures like spoons ¼oz or larger similar to Johnsons Silver Minnow in either silver, gold or black work great on red fish and sea trout using a light graphite  or a medium light fiberglass rod plus adding a grub, worm or a piece of black pork rind eel as a teaser. Daredevil spoons are also used but usually with slightly heavier saltwater fishing lures in the 1/1/2 to 4 pound sizes, you will need a medium to heavy  graphite or a heavy fiberglass casting or spinning rod.

There are many kinds of rubber baits the most successful of these is the squid for trolling; a smaller squid from shore as works well to. Some use a daisy chain that’s a 3 to 4 foot piece of wire with 3 to 4 squids on it they use clip on sinkers to keep them apart, these are good with either single hooks or 1 large treble hook, some don’t use any hooks and just use it as a teaser.

The darting type is another saltwater fishing lure these are made of wood or plastic plugs. They are designed to dig into the water and dart about when you jerk the rod tip. Another saltwater surface lure is the popping plug a hollow or cup faced plug that makes a noise when rod tip is jerked controls the action by either reeling the line in slow and with a soft twitch from time to time or a fast retrieve and a hard pop to the plug eventually you will start getting hits.

Saltwater fishing lures/jigs in saltwater you need a 5/8ths to 1oz in shallow water 25 feet depth 1 to 3 oz that should be used in depths of 80 to 150 feet. Animal hair with plastic worms work best also marabou feathers-hair are the most like nylon hair is the toughest it wont be chewed up as bad when barracuda or other toothy fish arrive. Success comes with a lot of casting and experimenting with different kinds of retrieval.
